Demo Reel 2007:

I’ll be entering the finished version of my 1 min film [Last Stop] to various animation festivals this summer. There’s no real guarantee that I’ll get in, but I figure why not take the chance. Wish me luck!

LAST STOP: a post-mortem

null

Some good news, the above screenshot managed to make it in the National Post in their exclusive on the Sheridan animation program!

Now that the post-production stage and preps leading up to Industry day is officially over with the final screening, everyone in 4th year animation can more or less rest easy for the time being. Overall I can say it’s been a really tough but rewarding 8 months. The support I got from all the old and new friends I’ve made these 4-5 years helped keep my head screwed on straight during my insane 16-20 hour day work schedule. Read the rest of this entry »

LAST STOP: 100% COMPLETE!

As of today it’s done, but I’ll still need to do some visual tweaking for next week if I want to make something better for the school screening.

I unfortunately cannot put it up online for people to view yet since I’ll be submitting to festivals. Most likely it’s after they’re over is when that should be kosher… I think..

But on the semi-brighter side, if I don’t make any festival screenings, I can put it up sooner!

I’ve got a small job lined up just after school ends, doing some freelance comic colouring for a little bit but at the same time trying to think through what I wanna do for the next year.

I’m feeling a little shaky, hopefully it passes. There’s a lot I want to do.

[Oh yeah, and did I tell you I wanted to go con hopping ;)?]

Mostly likely I’ll try to hit Anime North, CN Anime and Chicago Wizard Con. If I get more cash, I’ll be able to do some more travelling.

ONE MORE SCENE LEFT!

Just one more to clean/colour/composite [and several colour correction tweaks] and I will have conquered this 1 min monstrosity that has terrorized my life for the past 8 months!!!

Sound design-wise I’m about 95% done, and I’ve also found this wicked track for the film from a Montreal-based DJ by the name of Moonstarr. And the craziest part about that is how he also manages an indie label called PUBLIC TRANSIT RECORDINGS!

[Seriously, what were the chances of that?]

Check out the audio samples from Moonstarr and other artists on the PTR site if you like to hear some wicked breakbeats.

College portfolio

Since school is wrapping up soon and the animation department is in a tizzy trying to gather material to impress some industry reps come late April, they’ve given us animation grads these online portfolio thingies to put our stuff on. I’ve uploaded a couple things from the website as well as finalized stuff from my film. Some old, some new, but I’m sure some of you will be pleasantly surprised.

Check it out here [but please ignore the awkward web design they came up with ;)]

Right now I’m crashing and burning all over the animation table as usual trying to finish this thing. I’m definitely writing a post-mortem entry on this 1 min short as soon as I’m done. Till then, I’ll try to stay alive.

No caffiene?!

So reading week is over and I’m more or less back to regular school hours. I come to the realization:

I’VE BEEN ANIMATING WITHOUT BEING RUN ON CAFFIENE FOR TWO MONTHS. HOW THE FUCK DOES THAT WORK?!

Last Stop updates

null

It’s more or less the end of the reading week, and I’m a pile of burnt toast. Out of the 36 odd scenes I needed to do, I’ve got 12 done for sure. CLEANED, SCANNED, COLOURED, COMPOSITED [mostly]!!!!!

Joyness! Now comes the real crunch time. I’ve got around a month to finish the rest, do extra finishing tweaks and I’m done. Some of the crowd scenes from the story reel have been driving me up the wall so I’ve been putting them off for the longest time and doing them piece by piece.

Today I managed to finish colouring one of the hardest layouts I had to do, even if it took me the entire day [mostly because, I confess, I didn’t actually clean it up properly]. But it was pure self-pimpage, look closely at the posters and you might recognize some of the pieces from my gallery LOL.

Again, if anyone wants to check up on my gallery updates [however slow they seem], feel free to check out my other hangouts just to get a heads up as I recently finished a digital painting and a self-portrait.

I’ll be making some more personal notes on the film here as I go along. So far truth be told it all felt like, lemme find the right analogy… Childbirth a couple months ahead of time. Which just means I wish I didn’t have to feel so freaking rushed on the film.

One minute is amazingly a lot of work to do solo. I just don’t understand why our teachers are practically making us to do that much despite how many times they repeat it to us after the fact. Eesh LOL get your heads straight dammit!

Once all this is over, I swear I’ll never animate a crowd by hand ALONE ever again. If I gotta, I sure as hell am taking someone down with me!!

The screening…

► To see a larger version just click here.

It actually went over pretty well, sure there were some sketchy looking films but that really doesn’t matter in the long run. Overall I thought there was a lot of good effort put into making the story reels. The audience turnout was pretty good especially considering the screening was at 9-12 in the morning. I dunno what everyone thought of my reel cause there were no “HAHAHAs” anywhere except for the end, so hopefully I’ll find time to ask in person for some feedback and whatnot. For now, I’ll just settle it here hehehhehe.

Last Stop - 2nd draft leica

Check it out, it’s all right here.

No sound in this one, audio screwed up during the rendering so I’ll have to save that for next time. Chances are, I’ll have to reboard a crap load of things in this film.
